For many years, I simply accepted the teaching that Yeshua was Jesus’ name in Hebrew; similarly, I bought into the belief that Yahweh is a more accurate rendering of the tetragrammaton than Jehovah.
I no longer subscribe to these beliefs.
We must realize that it makes perfect sense for Satan to attack and cast doubt upon the very tools that God gave us to defeat him: the Word of God and the name of the Lord Jesus.
Regarding God’s Word, the scriptures tell us the following:
1 Samuel 3:21 – And the Lord appeared again in Shiloh: for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord.
Psalm 103:20 – Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.
Psalm 107:20 – He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
Psalm 119:130 – The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
Psalm 138:2 – I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.
Ecclesiastes 8:4 – Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
Matthew 4:4 – But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Matthew 8:8 – The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
Matthew 8:16 – When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
Luke 4:4 – And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
Luke 4:32 – And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
John 1:1 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 17:17 – Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
2 Timothy 3:16 – All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2 Peter 1:21 – For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
It is through God’s Word that we know Him and become more intimately acquainted with Him. It is God’s Word, God’s Truth, that gives light and understanding. It is God’s Word, full of power, to which angels hearken and from which unclean spirits flee. It is God’s Word that sanctifies us. It is God’s Word by which we live.
Regarding the name of Jesus, the scriptures tell us the following:
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
John 15:16 – Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
John 16:23 – And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
John 16:24 – Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
7 And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
Acts 4:12 – Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Acts 9:27, 29
27 But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.
29 And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him.
17 the same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9 that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Colossians 3:17 – And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
2 Thessalonians 1:12 – that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
According to Acts 4:12, there is no salvation apart from the name of Jesus!
Jesus is the name above all names, the name by which men are saved, the name that drives out unclean spirits, the name that sets captives free, the name, at which, every knee, including Satan’s, must bow. Why would Satan not seek to remove or cast doubt upon that name?
And we cannot know God or know about the power of the name of Jesus without God’s Word. Why would Satan not seek to remove or cast doubt upon His Word?
The name of Jesus has been attacked from the very beginning:
Acts 4:18 – And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
Acts 5:40 – And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
One of the first and most important things we learn about Satan is that he is subtle (Genesis 3:1). Satan has also not changed: He hated the name of Jesus and God’s Word then and he hates them now. The tactics he uses to attack the name of Jesus and the Word of God might change, but the attack itself does not change. For the early Church, the attack upon the name of Jesus was through persecution. Today, in addition to persecution, Satan uses linguistic differences to cast doubt upon God’s name and His Word.
Yeshua is modern Hebrew.
The New Testament was written in and translated from Greek, not modern Hebrew; one can only speculate as to how the name of Jesus would have been pronounced in ancient Hebrew during the time of Jesus and the apostles.
Furthermore, the name of Iesous (in English, Jesus) has been setting people free for thousands of years. Why is it suddenly not good enough? Indeed, we could make a similar argument for the tried and true legacy of the King James Version of the Bible!
Years ago, I sang songs to “Yahweh” and “Yeshua.” I now wonder to whom or to what I was singing!
We have a scriptural basis for Jehovah and Jesus; we have no such basis for Yahweh and Yeshua. We must have confidence in this scriptural basis and not allow Satan to bring doubt, as he did with Eve (Genesis 3:1).
“Yea, is Jesus really God’s name?”
“Yea, is that really the Word of God?”
If, when I stand before the Lord Jesus Christ, He tells me that He wants me to call Him Lord Yeshua, then I will do so. Until then, if it is not broken, we do not need to fix it!
